GIA FAQs

For whom is GIA designed?

GIA is organised by and for postgraduates to offer them an unique venue to present and discuss their work with their peers from around the world. GIA serves several purposes: to offer postgraduates from all levels of research an opportunity to receive critical feedback and suggestions on their work; to enable postgraduates to practice essential presentation skills in a friendly environment; and to foster networking among the next generation of scholarship. Every postgraduate from first year research to near submission are welcome to participate.

Where is GIA based?

GIA is based with the Graduate Students of the School of Religions and Theology at Trinity College, in Dublin, Ireland.

What is the format?
The conference consists of twenty minute papers with ten minutes discussion time, organised into sessions of similar topics. It is hoped that active debate and conversation will be fostered by the larger than normal discussion time.  It is intended that the sessions be professional, but relaxed.

What is the 'Biblical World'?
The term 'Biblical World' was chosen to be deliberately broad; it includes all disciplines which have an impact on the scholarly understanding of both the Hebrew and Christian bibles. Postgraduates working in areas of the Ancient Near East or applying new methodology are especially encouraged to participate.

Is the conference limited to participants?
While time limits the number of papers that can be presented, all interested scholars and students are welcome to attend the conference.  We're a self-funding organisation, so all donations will be gratefully received.

I can't make this year! Have I missed out?
GIA is an annual event held each year at Trinity College Dublin in February. Come in 2009!  Check this website for updates.

Anything else I should know?

We aim to publish selected papers from each year's proceedings and at the moment (2008), we're organising the 2007 publication with an academic publisher.
